Palakkad district joins the State to the rest of the country through a wide gap. Palakkad has witnessed in various incursions of historical importance. Bharatha-puzha, the longest river in Kerala originates from the highlands and flows through the entire district. This district is the chief granary of Kerala and its economy is mainly agricultural. The district has fostered Carnatic music. Great musicians like Chembai Vaidya-natha Bhagavathar and Palakkad Mani Iyer, personalities like KPS Menon and KP Kesava Menon are the products of this district. Forests and streams, dams and gardens have made this district a fairyland of tourist. According to William Logan, the author of the Malabar Manual, the Pallava dynasty of Kanchi might have invaded Malabar in the second or third century. One of their headquarters was a place called 'Palakada' which could be the present Palakkad. It is bordered on the north and north-west by Malappuram district and on the south by Thrissur district. The climate of the district is tropical. |

This place was also known as Kadathanadu about 300 years back. Vatakara is not known as Kadathanadu today. Vatakara's governing in those days, were comparable to the feudal rule that existed in Europe during 19th century. It was proved beyond doubt that Cherusseri who was the author of "Krishnagadha" was from Vatakara. Geographically Vatakara is situated to the west of Kozhikode by the side of the historical Kotakkal puzha. Initially known as Vadakkekara due to it's position with respect to the Kottakkal puzha the place came to be called as Vatakara by popular usage later. Kadathanadu, apart from its cultural richness, is also bestowed with the famous temple Lokanarkavu. Here we get see the best examples of ancient handicraft skills. 64 types of various sexual images are carved on these temple walls which itself prove the peak of that times handicraft. |

The name, Kasaragod, is said to be derived from the word Kusirakood meaning Nuxvomica forests (Kanjirakuttom). Kasaragod district was formed on May 24. 1984, with the intention of bestowing maximum attention on the development of backward areas. With the formation of the new district, comprising the erstwhile Kasaragod and Hosdurg taluks, it has become possible to develop this coastal area fruitfully. Lying on the north western coast of the State, Kasargod was famous from time immemorial. Many Arab travellers, who came to Kerala between 9th and 14th centuries A.D., visited Kasargod as it was then an important trade centre. They called this area Harkwillia. Mr.Barbose, the Portuguese traveller, who visited Kumbla near Kasargod in 1514, had recorded that rice was exported to Male Island from where coir was imported. Dr.Fracis Buccanan, who was the family doctor of Lord Wellesly, visited Kasargod in 1800. In his travelogue, he has included information on the political and communal set-up in places like Athiparamba, Kavvai, Nileshwar, Bekkal, Chandragiri and Manjeshwar. Kasargod was part of the Kumbala Kingdom in which there were 64 Tulu and Malayalam villages. |
